WELL he said, she said, everyone said that the government's having their way he said, she said, everyone said that there isn't really much left to say but when that feed of emptiness gets you down, empty your mind and feel the hate of the crowd surround you WELL he said, she said, everyone said that the celebrity's a real piece of work and he said, she said, everyone said that they've always been the biggest jerk (Solo and bridge) Well All my friends stopped confiding in me so I’m not sure what to believe and When that feed starts to feel too bleak And i’m once again at my knees Let go of everything that everyone said And just carry on (I need you so-oh, how will I know?)

I am inconsolable, waiting On you, to tell me What to do Every footstep out of line, Hoping and praying that My baby will give me a sign Ah~ like a seagull, lost and free Ah~ free falling, directionless, Baby won’t you be my compass I can be most anything, Not like me, something More appealing Catch the sea breeze in your eyes Look at the stars And tell me my sign I know you’re out there In the salty endless air Looking for a guy like me Who needs a girl to make him feel real Are you inconsolable, Or is it just a bad Phone signal? Let me know if you’re around, Unless my being there Would only bring you down

Empty Face 02:49
I don't wanna be your empty face I don't wanna feel your sweet embrace Let me, let me, take a little time away I don't wanna be your beating heart I can't stand that we're hardly apart say that, say that, everything is still okay Is that okay? I can't tell if you're not here with me I can't stand to hear your sympathy in every song from April into June tell me that it's over soon, if that means forgetting you (is it really over, is it really over baby?)

Landlocked 02:34
years ago and far away i swore that i was happier landlocked wishin' i was sitting stoned watching the sun sink on by but i'm sober, all alone just waiting to die as the breeze rolls through my door i romantically wish for the sandy shores of eastern cocoa meditative waves that tempt me so autumn time always leaves me blue it's so lonely to be landlocked (i'm so landlocked for you, baby)

about

Have you ever looked into the incongruous depths of your future and pondered whether you can still be "you" after passing through, or if "you" was really everything you thought? How much of "you" did you really stop and think about? Who are "you", really?

I've always been fascinated by the limitations of the Game Boy's sound hardware, and I wanted to challenge myself to write an entire album using only those sounds with my vocals layered throughout. I had just had my first daughter, and was facing a pretty extraordinary shift in my life. I was grappling with the serious and seemingly indomitable question, "Will parenthood change me irreversibly? Am I still who I was before this?" That inevitably led to a far greater existential questioning, but I dove headfirst back into both songwriting and production, making use of my renewed obsession with the Game Boy soundchip.

The album I ended up with bleeds 60's pop sensibilities mixed with an exclusively chiptune aesthetic. The first half of the album is all about various political and social musings, such as the criticism of living on social media found in "Everyone Says" and the unnuanced obsession with 80's aesthetics in "Nineteen Eighties." The second half, though, shifts into a far more introspective journey. You start to see the picture of a modern man thoroughly and excessively cynical about the world around him, addicted to social media.

That negativity is revealed to be driven by discontent in his personal life and dissatisfaction in his relationship, exemplified in songs like "Empty Face." He desperately wants an escape from this person leading him on a hot-and-cold chase. How much was compromised for her, and was moving away from the coastline worth the initial year or two of ecstasy? It's a very emotional journey, and I hope you, dear prospective listener, can enjoy and appreciate it as much as I enjoyed making it.
